Open Water Energy’s Shek O Challenge 2008

The So-U.TV team went to the beach over the weekend to bring you the latest action from Hong Kong’s top open water event: the Shek O Challenge. Swimmers of all ages and athletic abilities jumped into the sea to swim the intense 2.2km from Big Wave Bay to Rocky Bay Beach (Shek O Back Beach). The race ended with a wild beach party celebrating sport and the environment. Half of the registration fees were donated to the WWF for their Ocean Conservation Program. Want to know more? Jill Robinson, internationally renowned champion of Asia’s Moon Bears tells a tragic tale of pain and abuse. These bears are kept caged for most of their life in inhumane conditions only for the farming of their bile. Through love and education Animals Asia is making a difference by saving these bears one by one and educating the world on the pointlessness and cruelty of this activity. Changes in the attitude of government and cultural will bring change over time. But it is the action of the individual that will be most immediate.

This year over a half a million people filled Victoria Park. Participants from around the world created fantastical floral worlds. The spectacular event was accented with drawing, dancing, music and photography competitions. The best part of all is the reward at the end. All of the healthy plants are given to local agencies to keep the beauty alive all year long.
