Don’t look now but it seems like Hong Kong, the supposedly recognized hub of tourism and shopping in this part of Asia, continues to downplay the power of e-commerce. According to EcommercePlus data, the top three Chinese provinces that have fully embraced e-commerce based on total online purchase orders are Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Meanwhile, the top three cities that are fond of online shopping are Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. What’s wrong with this picture? No Hong Kong in sight, that’s what!
Guangzhou and Guangdong may be close neighbors of Hong Kong but the latter, the widely recognized mecca of retail and wholesale trade and shopping, is apparently an e-commerce snob. In fact, based on the data gathered by EcommercePlus, Hong Kong is nowhere even in the top 10!
Now the questions are: why do Hong Kong people resist e-commerce? What is it about e-commerce exactly that they frown upon?
And for the businesses (both online and offline) that want to garner more Hong Kong online orders, the challenge now is: what should you as a business entity do, acquire and implement in order to attract the attention of the Hong Kong customers?
The most possible steps to take would be to have cleaner, more transparent and more efficient portals where orders and customer relations can be established, developed and maintained. These portals must not only be pleasing to the eye and must not only offer good products or services…these must also know how to address customer concerns in the most effective manner. By the way, these portals need not be websites. They can be Facebook pages, Twitter pages, Sina Weibo profiles and the like. Of course, the employees who will process the orders must have topnotch customer service skills. And it will help a lot if a digital agency is on hand to assist. Perhaps only then can Hong Kong finally see a rise in the level of interest for online shopping.
We’ve heard of it oh-so-constantly – the belief that not a lot of people give donations to non-profit organizations these days primarily because of the weak economy. The truth though may surprise you. Fact is, more people actually give these days primarily because it’s easy for them to do so and because it’s easy for them to know what the cause is and to whom the donations will go. And social media played a huge part in all of that.
You see, due to the emergence of social media and the stronger appreciation for its power, magnitude and scope, more and more people and companies now use social media for the social good.
Take the case of Le Kids (www.lekids.org) whose members have made a lifelong commitment to help the disadvantaged children in rural China. Le Kids recently finished a fundraising event. Dubbed “Warriors to Wall Ride,” the event was an endurance cycling event from Xian, from the home of the ancient Terra-cotta Warriors to iconic Great Wall of China, and which eventually finished at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The charity bike ride raised $140,000.00.
And organizers recognized that social media had a lot to do with the success of the event. Social media agency PRDA Asia managed the online efforts related to the event and even sent a biker-representative who also served as the event blogger. That made sending real-time updates via social media really easy…and not to mention that it also drummed up interest on Le Kids as an organization and the purpose of the fundraiser. It truly was a win-win situation for a non-profit organization that was not only able to hold a memorable event and raised a lot of money for the cause but more importantly, also managed to provide education to HIV/AIDS impacted children.
A fundraising cum endurance biking event dubbed “Warriors to Wall Ride” was held last May 6 – 10, 2011 and with a whopping total of US $140,000.00 raised, the event was nothing short of a certified astounding success!
The event, which was spearheaded by non profit organization Le Kids (www.lekids.org), aimed to help eradicate poverty, lack of proper access to education as well as HIV/AIDS incidences among the children in rural China. Participants underwent endurance cycling challenges from Xian (from the home of the ancient Terra-cotta Warriors to iconic Great Wall of China) to historic Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The challenging route took the riders on an unforgettable journey visiting World Heritage sites and world famous attractions in Mainland China.
One of the participants who treaded hundreds of kilometers is Douglas White, top honcho of Prosperity Research Digital Agency or PRDA. White served as the daily blogger during the event and PRDA provided social media expertise. For 4 days, White did not only participate in the bike ride but also gave updates on the challenging trails, schedules and breaks. He also took the time out to describe the majestic sceneries along the way.
White said that he and his agency took part in the worthwhile cause not only because it is part of their community and corporate responsibility efforts but also because he believed that to be part of the event was a blessing.
“Le Kids aims to help children in rural China get what they truly deserve – access to education, proper health and nutrition and good quality of life. To be a part of a drive that aims to help children become stronger, more empowered human beings is something that I will no doubt be eager to be a part of,” White stressed.
The money raised – a whopping US $140,000 was turned over to the Chi Heng Foundation.
