Reviews Rave about Zafran on the Blogosphere

January 3, 2014

Everywhere you look, you’ll find the tastemakers and trendsetters of Hong Kong’s culinary scene raving about the sights sounds and, yes, tastes of Zafran. Zafran is a new tapas offering from the Aqua restaurant group, an innovative contemporary spin on what in Spain is called “tapas y musica”. Our basement site, nestled in a small alley away from the hustle and rush of Wyndham Street and just above Lan Kwai Fong, has an informal yet sophisticated feel with bare brick walls, leather chesterfields, and uniquely atmospheric lighting.

What’s truly important, of course, is the food. Hungry Hong Kong raves that our “tapas are perfectly prepared in traditional Spanish style, while still incorporating unique touches from the talented chef.” Everybody will find their own favorites as they explore our menu on repeated visits. Hungry Hong Kong says “We couldn’t get enough of the homemade chorizo and their creamy Iberico ham croquettes.”

Our tapas can enjoyed in the main dining area with high ceilings, large windows, exposed brick walls and wooden panelling, or in our relaxed and discreet ‘tapas lounge,’ which features a bar positioned in front of an open kitchen, where you can sit comfortably and make friends with our talented chefs! We also offer a room length cocktail bar, beautifully lit with carefully selected antique-style bulbs and perfect for after-work or late night cocktails listening to the beats of our expert DJs.

The tapas at Zafran’s are refined, delicate flavor combinations unlike anything you’ve tried before. Our menu includes classic selections such as bravas potatoes, Gambas ajillo (garlic chilli prawns) as well as contemporary signature tapas including Luxury Toast with Wild Mushroom, Langoustine carpaccio, Cod with Txangurro and Cuttle Fish Tagliatelle, Lamb Rack with Garlic Puree and Baby Onions, and 24 hour boneless oxtail. In addition to tapas we also feature succulent and satisfy mains. Hungry Hong Kong loved our “juicy, tender secreto Iberico pork and suckling pig with the crispiest melt in your mouth skin.”

When you visit, remember to save room for desserts like our sea salt and olive oil chocolate mousse. Plus, don’t forget to take Hungry Hong Kong’s advice and enjoy a “refreshing house sangria” with your meal, or else try one of our many delicious cocktails or “perfectly paired” wines.

Zafran Hong Kong – Where Tapas meet Musica, a soulful hotspot on Wyndham Street

November 22, 2013

Discover the hidden secrets of Zafran, a new restaurant that prides itself on its difference from the traditional Spanish ‘theme restaurant’. Instead, Zafran has taken a contemporary outlook, offering what in Spain is called “tapas y musica”. The basement site, a few steps away from mainstream Wyndham Street and just above Lan Kwai Fong, has been opened up to create three unique areas, with an underground vibe combining an informal yet sophisticated feel. The secret garden facade entrance is discreetly located off Wyndham Street in the alley beside Tivo restaurant.

The main dining area is an inviting area with high ceilings, large windows, exposed brick walls and wooden panelling, and seating capacity up to 100 seats for sit-down dining. With private booths and tables for up to six people each, the restaurant also has a well-appointed private dining room that seats up to 20 people, perfect for intimate gatherings or small corporate functions.

Adjacent to the restaurant is a room length cocktail bar. Beautifully lit with carefully selected antique-style bulbs, this area is perfect for after work or late night cocktails. Zafran boasts the largest selection of Cava in Hong Kong, as well as an extensive menu of signature cocktails and sangrias.

Zafran’s third area is a relaxed and discreet ‘tapas  lounge,’ which features a bar positioned in front of an open kitchen, where you can sit comfortably and meet our chefs. Watch them poetically plate tapas, made-to-order!

DJs play smooth beats during dinner which then elevate into more upbeat sessions that stretch into the early hours. Zafran’s grooves are rooted in Afro and Latin House to build up excitement in the room, with some Soulful, Tech House and Hip Hop thrown in to get bodies moving later in the evening.

New Bar, Restaurant and Tapas Lounge Opening on Wyndham Street

November 20, 2013

Zafran is a new concept from Aqua Restaurant Group and a new addition to Hong Kong’s thriving Spanish scene. Ideally located on lively and atmospheric Wyndham Street, Zafran offers a more distinct multi-faceted vibe than its peers with its industrial chic atmosphere extending through three distinct, yet remarkably cohesive spaces: the dining room, the tapas bar and the late night lounge.

Zafran’s main dining area sets the mood with high ceilings, large windows, exposed brick walls and wooden panelling. Adjacent to the restaurant, a room length cocktail bar, perfect for after work or late night cocktails. Zafran ’s third area is a relaxed and discreet ‘tapas lounge,’ which features a bar positioned in front of an open kitchen.

From here, head chef Mark Lores Panades serves up delicious traditional & modern Spanish cuisine, including tapas-sized and larger dishes. Signature dishes include classic tapas such as Zafran bravas potatoes, Iberico acorn ham –aged 48 months’ signature homemade chorizo and Gambas ajillo (garlic chilli prawns).

We also offer specialty Zafran tapas including luxury toast with wild mushroom and salsify, langoustine carpaccio, cod with txangurro and cuttle fish tagliatelle, lamb rack with garlic puree and baby onions, and Zafran’s signature 24hr boneless oxtail!

Drinks include a wide range of Spanish cava, red, white, sweet and fortified wine, and a selection of beautifully crafted cocktails.

Popular Korean heartthrob Rain makes a smash at MCM opening in Hong Kong Central…and on Sina Weibo!

June 29, 2011

Not only did popular Korean actor, singer, model and performer Rain take the breath away of thousands of fans (female ones, more particularly!) who attended the opening of MCM in Hong Kong Central, his appearance at the event also created quite a stir on Sina Weibo, the most popular microblogging site among the Chinese.

Rain’s attendance at the opening of MCM in Hong Kong Central generated at least 450 tweets on Weibo and guess who was responsible for 40 of those tweets? SOUTV, of course!

SOUTV, the digital publishing arm of PRDA Asia, is the one-stop source for entertainment, lifestyle, fashion and social media info that’s sure to capture everyone’s fancy. Needless to say, SOUTV’s tweets generated not only excitement for the event and for Rain but also, may we daresay, generated additional security challenges for the MCM peeps. Good thing the fans, guests and everyone else at the event were in their best behavior and the night was truly one to remember!

MCM is a luxury German fashion brand. Its latest foray in Hong Kong is a stand-alone boutique in Harbour City shopping center in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The store is a 120 sq. m. luxury paradise filled with leather goods, shoes, hand bags and accessories. While it’s true that Korean eye candy Rain was one of the biggest draws during the event, people also came to meet legendary New York stylist Patricia Field (a.k.a. the woman behind those swanky threads on Sex And The City!), Hong Kong Canto-pop singer and actress Sammi Cheng and models Qiqi Yum and Jocelyn Luko.

The launch was truly for the books and we have Rain (and social media, courtesy of SOUTV) to be thankful for.

Cheers to MCM!
